Mercy is a talker. A talker and a rambler and a bit of a bullshitter. Take everything she says with a grain of salt; her sarcastic streak and morbidly dry humour usually endear her wonderfully to her team mates, friends and anyone else she happens to see. She doesn't make a point in being brash or abrasive, but it happens. Her fuse isn't that long and she is easy set off.
Additionally, her moods swing worse than a trapeze artist. Her happy moods are at one extreme but her depressive, self-loathing and pitying moods are just as extreme. She can fake things well at most times, although she's quick to anger at certain topics; she doesn't like isolation, nor does she like being crowded however. She'd prefer a much more laid back but constant surrounding without the hassle of assholes.
The problem is, she can be that asshole. She doesn't like rules or very much authority, her own CO has to put up with a lot of shit from her, but his ability to do so gains a respect from her that would prompt her to take a bullet for him. Mercy is a deeply troubled and paranoid young woman, suffering the after effects of years of her life she cannot fully remember. Still unsure as to her full past due to the loss of certain points in her memory, Vortex is less and less willing to talk about herself beyond what happens in the here and now.
Mercy isn't the romance type. She doesn't like candy and flowers or being treated like a 'lady', she prefers a more masculine approach, is there for fun and doesn't like attachments. She isn't keen on forming anything beyond a mutually beneficial arrangement, when it comes to talking or anything that involves anything remotely like getting to know each other, she bails.
She doesn't and won't do commitment of any kind and is more than happy if there's more than one person on the go. She doesn't bother with gender because sex is sex and she's not interested in anything else. Connections scare her and although she'll never admit it, she knows she'll probably wind up with nothing and no one and right now, that's fine.
While loud and brash, she's not exactly a life of the party type of girl, but she is social. She enjoys being places, with people and is a chatterbox at the best of times. She'll drag people along on things and will attempt to make them have fun, but she could be just as happy sitting somewhere listening to music so long as there are other people around her doing something else.
While she makes friends easily enough, she doesn't let them get too close. Mercy is far too used to leaving places to form connections of a solid ground and would more than likely push anyone away if it came down to it. Her partner and CO are her family, and Mercy is more than comfortable to leave it at that.
Her personal opinions are closely guarded, occasionally a true glimpse at her belief in certain matters shining through, or her vocalised position being truthful instead of bullshit. Mercy doesn't openly declare her position in the human/mutant spectrum, although she follows the party line with her job, often sneering at mutants that believe in human/mutant equality, mostly because she is disgusted by a large population of humans and doesn't necessarily see herself or her 'kind' as 'equal' to humans. But Mercy has never declared herself a homo-superior supporter or a homo-sapien hater. She's very much a dark horse in that regard.
Trained from a young age, Mercy is a mutant with specific skill sets thanks to HYDRA.
Mercy is known as a 'gravitational vortex manipulator', dubbed 'Vortex' by H.Y.D.R.A, she was trained to facilitate the capture of people and objects from distances without extensive detail on location. Vortex has been responsible for the apprehension of warheads, refuges and informants, pulling forces from behind enemy lines and the eradication of an entire rebel force.
With the ability to manipulate the gravitational pull of the atmosphere around her, Vortex can create 'blackholes' in one place to pull objects or people through to another place of her choosing, or to simply lose them within the dimensional rip she created. With the innate knowledge of longitude and latitude, Vortex can open two 'holes' that pass to the other, creating a sort of portal. This power made Vortex invaluable for certain black ops.
If Mercy can see the two points she wishes the portals to open to, she can use them as short distance travel. This drains her more than long distances, however, because of the concentration level. The portals are thick, cloying and have a somewhat inky feel to them. While others may feel a slight disorientation when stepping through the portals, Vortex herself feels connected.
In her sleep; Vortex has displayed the ability to see within the oblivion that her blackholes open. These are the source of numerous nightmares. While the nature of her power has never fully been discovered, Mercy's eyes take on a black, inky colour when her powers are pushed to their extreme. It is undetermined why this is, but there have been recorded incidents of nosebleeds and migraines directly following the change in her eyes.
Hand to Hand Combat:
Trained expertly in hand to hand combat, Vortex is a specialist in several fighting styles. Her most notable is boxing, however she is adept in taekwondo and karate.
Mercy is stylised as an 'out-fighter' boxer and relies more on her agility and dexterity than sheer strength; although she maintains a more tightly wound style in boxing, she is able to devolve into a 'slugger' style when required to maximise the effect and minimise the time of a fight.
Due to her hand to hand training, Vortex has a higher level of stamina, strength and determination, she is also fairly athletic, although she does not participate in many 'exercise' methods that do not include a fighting style in which she is trained.
Although ambidextrous, Vortex favours her right side in fighting, and will train people to use their right side as a more dominant side. This gives her an upper hand when required as she can easily switch.
Similarly, Vortex is trained in fire arm maintenance and use. With a varied training scheme, Mercy specialises in easily concealed automatic pistols, favouring the Glock 18 and Berreta 93R. Her standard issue 9mm, although not her specialised weapon, is the gun she carries at all times.
Vortex is also heavily trained in usage of the P90 USG for standard covert ops, the M1918 BAR for high cover ops and the Armalite AR-50 bolt action sniper rifle for high-light sniper ops.
Training has not extended into extensive sniper training or explosives training.
Mercy is also skilled in the art of subterfuge, adapting keenly to a role no matter how far from her own personality it is. While her own personality is strong, her ability to blend or stand out can change at a moments notice. Although not exactly heralded as a 'skill' she is also very well versed in popular culture.
As per some requirements, Mercy has picked up linguistic skills, computer aptitude, lock breaking abilities and a rather expensive penchant for shoes.
Mercy Camryn Dyer was born in 1988 and was raised in the heart of Seattle, with her widowed father following her mother's death by heart attack in 1994. For the ten years of her life following her mother's death, Mercy grew up with her father and uncle, along with her uncle's wife and four children. She didn't exactly get along with them, but it was better than constantly being by herself. School was school; Mercy didn't stand out, she didn't put too much effort into anything but she worked hard not to draw attention to herself for failing.
Although her father had attempted to give her a 'family' with his brother, Mercy found she really didn't like how 'different' she was. When she was fourteen, she made her cousin disappear from the house and reappear at the local park; she cited the reason that he was being a pest. Due to the abnormal incident, Mercy's aunt started talking about her 'weird' niece to her friends from church, before long, Mercy was approached by a man in a black suit with a badge of some kind and the offer of 'understanding'.
H.Y.D.R.A promised to help figure out a way to control the power, that they could assist in learning to deal with how it worked and show Mercy how to function with the ability. There was no reason to say no. At the age of sixteen, Mercy was taken to a H.Y.D.R.A facility in Canada and started her education and training with her mutant power.
Mercy was assigned the name 'Vortex' due to her abilities and pushed through her training. Her youth gave her an edge in hand-to-hand training and she was put to work with weapons and computer skills, something she excelled in naturally. Mercy was sufficiently competent with her fire arms training, but her adolescent behaviour and back-chatting often got her into trouble with her superiors and training officers. Following an incident with her defence instructor, where her instructor lost his cool due to several smart mouthed comments, Mercy Dyer was drafted to a secondary experimental group of 'specialists' to be utilised by the organisation. For several years, Mercy was used in black ops and below radar technology thefts, but her partnerships were constantly short lived and frequently resulted in semi-compromised missions with detrimental outcomes, although few ever really 'failed'. Mercy was removed from the group and placed within a smaller unit of H.Y.D.R.A agents with a more organised objective. While the move didn't stem Mercy's mouth or attitude, her assigned partner, Grant Metcalf, grounded her to a less unstable frame of mind.
Extensive ops in espionage, infiltration and acquisition, wet work and several intelligence gathering assignments have honed Mercy's skills to a fine point; although her mouth still runs away from her and she's still somewhat insubordinate, she does hold a secure position in the H.Y.D.R.A organisation for her talents. Even if she's occasionally distracted from her target and her actions denote disloyalty, Mercy has and likely will for a long time, toe the H.Y.D.R.A line out of respect for her CO and the friendship of her partner.
For several years, Mercy and Grant were lorded as one of H.Y.D.R.A's most effective units, Grant's strict manner of fulfilling their objectives, and Mercy's quick thinking when things went to shit worked well for the pair of them. Quickly solidifying them as one of the most valuable assets H.Y.D.R.A had.
It was the reason they were sent to infiltrate Stark Industries.
After several months of setting up cover, with twists and turns and run ins with former H.Y.D.R.A agents, Vortex and Hunt completed their objective of reliquishing Jericho Missile blueprints from the Stark Industries server, providing H.Y.D.R.A with the means to produce their own Jericho Missile. Afterwards, both expected a quick evac of the area and a new mission. Neither came.
For a few more months, they were left in New York, clutching to their cover while growing more and more agitated by the day. Eventually, their next mission came in. Maintain their cover and infiltrate Worthington Industries to find out what they could about the 'cancer cure' that was being developed. Splitting up was never one of Mercy and Grant's strong points. Nerves frayed and pulled thin, they silently questioned their positions in H.Y.D.R.A while carrying out their appointed task. Mercy gained access to Worthington by becoming a valued Personal Assistant, even at the detriment of her own sanity at times, and Grant maintained his role at Stark Industries working security while monitoring Mercy and her complete mental break down.
The straw that broke the camels back came in the form of Victor Creed. Shortly after New Year, Sabertooth attacked the apartment where Mercy and Grant were living, getting into a heated battle with Grant and almost killing him before Mercy got there to get Grant out of danger. With Grant seriously wounded, Mercy went to ground with him to regroup, after blowing up their apartment and Creed.
Blaming H.Y.D.R.A for the fact that they were still there to be targeted, Mercy and Grant opted for a plan to buy them some time to decide what to do about their current employers and the fact that they had, seemingly, become expendable. Mercy's loyalty first and foremost lies with her partner, something which may be extreme co-dependence, irrational love, or just a need to have that stability near by, but whatever the cause, Mercy sees Grant as priority number one.
With Grant entering the SuperHuman! game show in an attempt to give them a little bit more time, Mercy had to face up to more than a few minor, or major, epiphanies concerning her relationship with Grant. Not least her utterly possessive nature. Following the destruction and carnage of the game show's finale, Mercy and Grant settled in out of the limelight while working their angles.
When SHIELD called for assistance, or Jessica Drew really, Mercy and Grant took the opportunity to possibly form some bonds and took up the job, assisting in the capture of Loki following the implementation of the SHRA. The night after they successfully captured the Asgardian, Mercy and Grant threw the platonic part of their partnership out the window and took the plunge towards something more.
That all worked out fine until Grant acquired a few stalkers, which after digging around turned out to be his utterly estranged family. The lies the Grant had grown up believing were tossed out the window and the truth was revealed and Mercy and Grant managed to take on yet more in the way of responsibility, deciding that maintaining something with the newly found Metcalf family was possible.
Now, Grant and Mercy are looking into opening a restaurant with Grant's fellow game show contestant Clint Barton, while keeping in with Grant's family and navigating their relationship with a baby puppy to boast of.
